CVIII. Scathing Rebuke Against the Scribes and Pharisees (Mt 23:1-39; Mk 12:38-40; Lk 20:45-47)

Then Jesus spoke to all the multitudes and to his disciples. And in his teaching he said in the hearing of all the people, “Beware, take heed of and guard against the scribes: those choosing to walk about in flowing robes, and earnestly endeavoring to be ambitious for honorable greetings in the marketplaces, and striving their utmost to acquire the most honorable seats in the synagogues, and exerting themselves to acquire the uppermost places of honor at banquets: those that are plundering widow’s houses, and who while for a pretentious front they are even praying extensively: these will receive a greater sentence of judgment.

“The scribes and Pharisees sit on the seat of Moses: all things therefore, whatsoever they bid you to observe, you strictly keep and do: but you are not to do after their works; for they are saying, but are not doing. For they are binding up oppressively heavy burdens that are difficult and grievous to be borne, and are laying, inflicting or imposing them upon people’s shoulders; but they themselves are unwilling to move them with their finger. And they are doing all their works in order to be seen by men: for they are broadening or enlarging their phylacteries, and they are amplifying the fringes of their garments, and they are fondly delighting in the prominent places at feasts, and the prominent seats in the synagogues, and are fond of salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called “Rabbi” by men. But you all should not be called “Rabbi:” for One is your Teacher or Instructor - the Christ or Messiah - and all of you are brothers. And call not any of you on the earth “father:” for One is your father - the One in the heavens. Neither be you called “guides” or “leaders:” for One is your guide and leader - the Christ or Messiah. And he that is greater among you shall be your minister or servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself will be abased or humbled; and whosoever will humble himself will be elevated or exalted.

“But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees! Hypocrites! For you are endeavoring to prevent entrance into the kingdom of the heavens (by shutting the door) in the face of men: for you yourselves are not entering in, neither are you permitting those entering to enter.

“Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees! Hypocrites! For you are making a prey of widow’s houses even while you are prolix-praying as a specious cloak. Because of this you will receive greater condemnation.

“Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees! Hypocrites! For you are traversing land and sea to make one proselyte; and when he could be converted, you are making him twice a son of Gehenna more than yourselves.

“Woe unto you, you blind guides, those saying, “Whosoever should swear by the temple sanctuary, it is nothing; but whosoever should swear by the gold of the temple sanctuary, is a debtor bound by his oath.” Morons! Mentally blind ones! For which is greater: the gold, or the temple sanctuary sanctifying the gold? And (woe unto you that say), “Whosoever should swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever should swear by the gift that is upon it, is a debtor bound by his oath.” Morons! Mentally blind ones! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar sanctifying the gift? Therefore, the one swearing by the altar, swears by it, and by all the things upon it. And the one swearing by the temple sanctuary, swears by it, and by the One inhabiting it. And the one swearing by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by the One sitting upon it.

“Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees! Hypocrites! For you are giving tithes of garden mint, and anethum or dill, and cumin, and have passed over the more momentous, weightier, important matters of the Law: justice, and mercy, and faith. These things you ought to have been doing, while not neglecting those others. Blind teachers filtering out the gnat, but gulping down the camel.

“Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees! Hypocrites! For you are cleansing and purifying the outside of the cup, and the outside of the dish, but within they are full of rapacity and intemperance. Blind Pharisee! First cleanse the inside of the cup, and the inside of the dish, in order that their outside may become clean also.

“Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees! Hypocrites! For you are all likened unto white-washed sepulchers, which outwardly are themselves appearing to be truly comely, but within they are full of the bones of the dead, and completely full of putrefaction. Even so, you all yourselves indeed also are outwardly appearing righteous unto men, but within you all are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

“Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees! Hypocrites! For you all are embellishing the sepulchers of the prophets, and adorning the monuments of the righteous, and say, “If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.” Consequently you are all bearing confirming testimony against yourselves that you are the sons of those slaying the prophets. Now fill up the measure of your fathers. Serpents! Offspring of vipers! How can you make escape from the adverse sentence of Gehenna? Therefore, behold, (in mercy) I send forth unto you prophets, and sages, and scribes: some of them you will kill and will crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city: so that upon you may come all the righteous blood being shed upon the earth, from the blood of Abel the just, unto the blood of Zachariah, son of Barachiah, whom you slew between the sanctuary and the altar. Truly I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one killing the prophets and stoning those that have been sent unto her! How often I wanted to gather together your children, even as the hen gathers together her brood under wings, but you would not have it! Behold, your house is being deserted and left unto you abandoned to ruin. For I say unto you, from now on you will never see me until you can say, “Blessed is the one coming in the Name of the Lord.””

CIX. The Widows Mites (Mk 12:41-44; Lk 21:1-4)

And he sat down over by the treasury and was beholding the multitude depositing money into the treasury. And looking upwards he saw many of the rich men that were casting much for their gifts into the treasury. And he saw coming one certain poor widow, and she was casting in thither two mites, which barely make half a farthing. And calling his disciples near unto him, he said unto them, “Verily, of a truth I say unto you that this poor widow cast in more than all they that are casting into the treasury. For all these did cast in gifts to God out of their whole superfluity and abundance, but she out of her want, need or penury did cast in all, as much as she had, even her whole livelihood.”

CX. Gentiles Seek Jesus (Jn 12:20-36)

Now there were some Greeks among those, going up, in order that they might worship at the feast. These therefore approached Philip, the one from Bethsaida of Galilee, and were asking him, saying, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.” Philip came and told Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip told Jesus. And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man shall be glorified. Truly, truly I say unto you, unless the grain of wheat falling into the soil dies, it remains solitary; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. The one inordinately cherishing his animal life will be deprived of it, and the one regarding his animal life with less affection for this present order of things will preserve it safe into eternal life. If any one of mine can serve me, let him imitate or follow; and where I am, there my servant will be also: if any one can serve me, him will the Father treat graciously, visiting him with marks of favor. Now my soul has become disquieted and anxious with the result that it is now troubled with grief; and what shall I say? “Father, deliver me from this hour?” But for this cause came I into this hour: Father, glorify your Name.” Then as a result there came a voice out of heaven, “I glorified it now, and I will glorify it again.” Therefore the multitude standing by and hearing it said that thunder had happened: others said, “An angel has spoken to him by this.” Jesus responded and said, “This voice has not happened for my sake, but for your sakes. Now is the judgment of this present order of things: now will the ruler of this world be cast out or expelled. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all persons unto myself.” But he was speaking this signifying or indicating what manner of death he is to soon be dying. The multitude answered him, “We heard out of the Law that the Christ or Messiah is abiding and remaining permanently or forever: and how is it that you are saying, that it behooves the Son of Man to be lifted up?” Who is this Son of Man?” Then Jesus said unto them, “Yet a short time the Light is with and among you. Walk in interaction while you have the Light, lest darkness overtakes you: for the one walking in the darkness knows not where he is going. While you have the Light, believe into the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.” Jesus spoke these things, and departing he hid himself from them.

CXI. The Jews Reject the Messiah (Jn 12:37-50)

But he having done so many signs and wonders before them, they believed not into him, so that the word of the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, which he spoke, “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom was the arm of the Lord revealed?” For this cause they could not believe, because Isaiah again said, “He has blinded their eyes, and he has hardened their heart; so that they could not see with their eyes, and could not understand with their heart, and might receive conversion, and I might restore them unto myself.” These things Isaiah said when he saw his glory and spoke of him. Nevertheless, even many of the rulers believed into him; but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing him, lest they be socially ostracized, excommunicated and expelled out of the synagogue, and forced to relinquish Jewish privileges: for they loved the recognition of persons more than the recognition of God. But Jesus cried out and said, “The one placing credence beyond mental assent and believing or faithing into me, is not believing or faithing into me, but into the One sending me. And the one beholding me beholds the One sending me. I have come into the world as a light, so that everyone believing or faithing into me may not remain in the darkness. And if any man hears my sayings, and should not believe them, I can not judge him: for I came not in order that I might judge the world, but in order that I might preserve, rescue or save the world. The one rejecting me, and receiving not my sayings, has this judging him: the word that I spoke; this will judge him in the final day. For I spoke not from myself; but the One sending me, the Father, he has given me a charge, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that this charge is existing life eternal: therefore what things I speak, even as the Father has said unto me, so I speak.

CXII. The Destruction of Jerusalem and the End of the Age (Mt 10:17-22; 24:1-26:2; Mk 13:1-37; Lk 21:5-36)

And as Jesus went out from the temple and was going forth on his way, some of his disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple, speaking of how they were adorned with goodly stones and offerings. One of his disciples said unto him, “Teacher, behold, what great stones and what great buildings!” But Jesus responding, said unto them, “Do you not see these great buildings and things? As for these things which you behold, truly I say unto you, the days will come in which there shall not be left here one stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.”

And as he sitting on the mount of Olives across from the temple, the disciples Peter, James, John and Andrew came unto him privately and asked, saying, “Tell us, Teacher, when therefore shall these things be? And what shall be the sign when all these things are about to come to pass and be accomplished; and what will be the sign of your coming, arrival or advent, and of the consummation or end of the age?” And Jesus answering, began to say unto them, “Take heed and watch that you be not lead astray by any man: for many will come upon my Name, saying, “I am the Christ or Messiah,” and, “The time has come and is now here,” and they will lead and cause many to go astray: go not therefore after them. And when you shall hear of impending wars, and seditious instabilities or tumults, and rumors of wars, see that you be not terrified, alarmed, disturbed, disquieted, troubled or in consternation: for all these things of necessity must come to pass first; but the end is not yet immediate.”

Then he said unto them, “For nation shall be raised up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there will be famines in diverse places, and there will be great earthquakes in diverse places, and plagues or pestilences; and there will be both ominous, monstrous, momentous events of prophetic significance which inspire terror, and great signs from heaven. But all these things are the preliminaries, birth-pangs or the beginning of troubles. Then shall they deliver you up unto trial, affliction, distressing circumstances or tribulation, and they shall kill you: and you will be hated by all men and nations for my Name‘s sake. And then shall many be affected with scruples and repugnance and fall away (from The Faith), and will hand over or deliver up one another (to authorities), and will hate one another. Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child; and children shall rise up against parents for their own preservation, and cause them to be put to death. And many false prophets shall be raised up, and will mislead and deceive many. And because lawlessness is to be multiplied or increased, the love, care and affection of the majority will become cold; but the one holding out, continuing firm, and remaining constant, persevering and enduring to the end (in The Faith), this one will be saved. And this Gospel of the kingdom (in fairness and mercy) must first be proclaimed in the whole inhabited world for a testimony unto all the nations; and then at that time the end shall come.

{“But take heed to yourselves and beware of men. For before all these things they shall lay their hands on you, and shall persecute you, and betray you, delivering you up to the Sanhedrin; and they shall be delivering you up into the synagogues for scourging, and into the prisons in which you shall be beaten; and they shall be bringing you to stand before kings and governors on account of my Name and for my sake. It shall result in or become unto you for a testimony unto them, and to the Gentiles. When they lead you away, delivering you up, be not anxious. Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to premeditate or practice beforehand on how to make a defense, how to answer, or what you shall say: for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries opposing you shall not be able to withstand or to contradict. Whatsoever shall be suggested, supplied or is given you in that hour, that you speak: for you are not the ones speaking, but the Holy Spirit of your Father is the One speaking through you. But you shall be betrayed, handed over or delivered up even by parents, and brothers or brethren, and relatives or kinsfolk, and friends; and some of you they shall cause to be put to death or executed. And you shall be hated by all men for my Name’s sake. But never a hair of your head shall perish. In your patient awaiting and endurance you shall gain or win your souls. And when you see Jerusalem surrounded by (Roman) armies [A.D. 70], then know that her devastating ruin and desolation has arrived and is now here. Then let those that are in Judea take flight and escape, fleeing into the hills; and let those that are in the midst of her hurry out, and depart from her; and let those that are in the rural areas not enter into her. For these are days of satisfying retributive justice, punishment and vengeance, so that all things that have been written (in the Old Testament Scriptures) can be fulfilled. Woe unto the pregnant and unto those women that are nursing in those days! For there shall be great distress, trial and affliction upon the land, and avenging punishment on this people. And they shall fall down dead by the edge of the sword, and they shall be led captive into, and be subject unto, all the nations: and Jerusalem shall be trampled down under (the feet of the) nations, until the opportunities of the nations (for salvation) are fulfilled in the end of days."}

“Now (near the end of the times of the nations, in the last days), when you therefore see the abomination of devastating desolation set up, established or fixed - the one which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet - standing in the holy place (in Jerusalem) where it ought not (let the one reading understand), then let these that are in Judea take flight and flee onto the mountains: and let the one that is on the housetop not descend or go down into the house, nor enter in to take any thing out of his house: and the one dwelling in the field, let him not return back to get or take his cloak of those things left behind. [in other words, get out, and get out fast!] And woe unto these that are holding child in the womb, and unto those giving suck in those days! And pray so that your flight not occur in the winter, neither on a Sabbath: For then in those days shall be great pressure, distress, trial, affliction or tribulation, such as there has not been the like from the beginning of the world’s creation which God created until now, no, nor ever can come to pass thereafter. And unless the Lord had cut short those days, no one of flesh would be saved: but for the sake of the precious elect whom he has chosen out for himself, the Lord cut short those days, therefore those days shall be shortened.

“And then if any one says unto you, “Lo, the Christ or Messiah is here,” or, “Lo, there;” you all should not believe him. For there shall be raised up false Christs or Messiahs, and false prophets, and they will show great prodigious miracles, signs and wonders, so as that they may lead astray, deceive, seduce and pervert if possible, even the elect. [cf: II Thessalonians 2] But take heed and watch: behold, I have told you all things beforehand. If therefore they should say unto you, “Behold, he is in the desert or wilderness;” you should not go forth: “Behold, he is retiring in the privacy rooms;” you should not believe them. For just like as the lightning comes forth from the east, and flashes even as far as the west; so also shall be the coming, arrival, advent of the Son of Man. For wheresoever the carcass may be, there will the vultures be gathered together. [As a vulture finds its meal, so Christ will find you: you don't need to go looking for him.]

“But in those days, immediately after that distressing tribulation and trying affliction, there will be signs in the sun and moon and starry constellations; and upon the earth, anxious distress of nations in doubtful uncertainty and perplexity (because of the) roaring and agitated tossing or rolling of the sea; persons fainting at heart and becoming dismayed from fear, and from expectation or anticipation of the things coming upon the inhabited world: the sun will be darkened or obscured, and the moon will not give her splendid light, and the luminous star-like bodies, luminaries or meteors of heaven will be falling from the heaven, and the powers that are of the heavens will be rocked and shaken or disturbed: (And when these things are themselves beginning to come to pass, cheerily look up, and lift up your heads; because your deliverance is drawing nigh.) And then shall they see the sign of the Son of Man appear in the heavens, coming in upon the clouds of heaven with great power and great glory. And then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn for themselves and wail, beating themselves in lamentation. And then shall he send forth his angels with a trumpet of great sound, and they shall gather together his elect from out of the four winds, from the uttermost extremity of the earth, to the uttermost extremity of heaven - even unto the ends of them. [cf: II Thessalonians 1:3-10: Christ deals with both the lost and the saved at the same time in one second coming on the last day, John 6:39,44,54, not seven years before the last day as many now claim. cf: I Thessalonians 4:13-18; I Corinthians 15:51-57.]

And he told a parable to them: “Now from the fig tree learn the illustration: Behold the fig tree, and all the trees. When its branch becomes now tender and puts forth its leaves, and they should shoot forth already, seeing this, you are knowing of your own selves that the summer is now near. Even so you also, when you see all these things coming to pass or happening, you are knowing that the kingdom of God is nigh - even upon or at the doors. Truly I say unto you that this generation (that witnesses all these things happening) shall in no way pass away until all these things can be accomplished. The sky and the earth shall pass away, but my words shall never pass away. But no one knows for sure concerning that day and hour, not the angels in heaven, not even the Son, but my Father only.

“And as were the days of Noah, so also will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until which day Noah entered into the ark, and they knew not until the flood came and took (them) all away: so will be the coming appearing or presence of the Son of Man. Then (at that time) two will be in the field: the one is being taken away or carried off (to the Savior’s side) with personal interest, and the one is being rejected and sent away with prejudice (into hell): two grinding in the mill - one is being taken away or carried off with personal interest (to the Savior‘s side), and one is being rejected and sent away (into hell) with prejudice. Take heed to yourselves and watch and pray therefore, lest perchance your hearts should be surfeiting in debauchery, and drunkenness, and the cares of things in this life, and that day come upon you suddenly: [This verse indicates that there will be an economy for the Christian. The Antichrist will not control world commerce by the mark of the beast because here Christian consumption is indicated. Revelation is a false book forged by Cerinthus the heretic.] for as a snare, it shall come in upon all those dwelling upon the face of the whole earth. And watch, therefore, all the time, praying and beseeching and making supplication for yourself, so that you may be accounted worthy to escape or avoid all these things that are about to come to pass, and be made to stand before the presence of the Son of Man.

“Watch, therefore because you surely know not when the time is, or on what day your Lord is coming. But this you are knowing, that if the master of the house had known for sure in what watch the thief was coming, he could have watched, and would not have allowed his house to be dug into. Therefore you also make ready and be prepared: for which hour you think not the Son of Man is coming.

“Like an absent man, sojourning in another country, departing from his house, and giving authority to his slaves, to each his work, commanding also the doorman that he should be watchful, circumspect, attentive and vigilant. You all be watchful, circumspect, attentive and vigilant therefore: for you do not know for sure when the Lord of the house is coming, (whether at) the first watch of late evening, or at midnight, or at the third watch of the night near cock-crow, or in the early morning watch which ushers in dawn; lest coming suddenly he should light upon you and discover you are sleeping. And what I say unto you, I say unto all. Be watchful, circumspect, attentive and vigilant!

“Who then is the faithful, trusty, true and discreet, considerate, thoughtful, prudent slave, whom his lord has appointed or set over his family household to give them food in due season? Fortunate is that slave whom his lord, when he comes, shall find so doing. Truly I say unto you, that he will appoint, or set him over all his goods, possessions and property. But if that slave is bad, and should say in his heart, “My lord is long to come;” and should begin to hit his fellow-slaves for his own pleasure, and to eat and drink with those drinking (alcohol); the lord of that slave will come on a day which he expects not, and in an hour which he knows not, and shall inflict extremely severe punishment on him, and will allocate, assign or appoint his allotted portion, lot or destiny with the moral, religious hypocrites: there will be the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth.

“Then shall the kingdom of the heavens be likened or compared to ten virgins who, taking their torches, went forth into a meeting of the bridegroom. And five of them were prudent, and five were morons. Those morons, having taken up their torches, did not take oil with themselves: but the prudent took oil in their vessels with their torches. Now the bridegroom lingering long, they all nodded and sunk into sleep, and were sleeping. But at midnight a cry occurred with present results: “Behold, the bridegroom is coming! Come out into his meeting!” Then all those virgins had been aroused and trimmed and readied their torches. And the morons said unto the prudent, “Give us of your oil; for our torches are going out.” But the prudent answered, saying, “Peradventure there would not be enough for us and for you: but rather, you all go to those selling oil and buy it for yourselves.” And while they were going away to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him into the marriage feast: and the door was shut. And afterwards the remaining virgins came also, saying, “Lord, Lord, open up unto us.” But answering he said, “Truly I say unto you, I know you not.” Be watchful, circumspect, attentive and vigilant therefore, for you know not for sure the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.

“For it is just like as a man, going abroad (into another country), who called his own slaves and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave fifteen thousand shekels, unto another six thousand, and unto another three thousand; unto each according to their own several ability; and he immediately went abroad (on his journey). The one that received the fifteen thousand shekels went and traded with them, and made fifteen thousand shekels more. In like manner he also that got six thousand gained six thousand more. But he that received the three thousand went away and dug in the soil and hid his lord’s silver. Now after a long time the lord of those slaves is coming for reckoning and is adjusting accounts with them. And the one receiving the fifteen thousand shekels approaching, brought near other fifteen thousand shekels, saying, “Lord you delivered unto me fifteen thousand shekels: lo, I have gained fifteen thousand shekels more with them.” His lord said unto him, “Well done, good and faithful slave: you have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things: enter into the joy of your lord.” And also the one receiving the six thousand shekels approaching, said, “Lord, you delivered unto me six thousand shekels: lo, I have gained six thousand shekels more with them.” His lord said unto him, “Well done, good and faithful slave: you have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things: enter into the joy of your lord.” And also the one having received the three thousand shekels approached and said, “Lord, I knew you, that you are a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering from where you did not scatter, and being afraid, I went away and hid your three thousand shekels in the ground (where it would not be stolen): lo, you retain what is yours.” But answering his lord said unto him, “You slothful, inactive and indolent, idle slave! You knew that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter; therefore you ought to have put my silver to the bankers, and at my coming I could have received back mine own with interest! Therefore, take away from him the three thousand shekels, and give it unto him possessing the thirty thousand shekels. For unto every one that has shall more be given, and he shall receive abundance: but from the one that has not, even that which he has shall be taken away from him. And cast out the worthless slave into the outer darkness: where there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth.”

“And when the Son of Man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit upon his throne of glory: and before him shall be gathered all the nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and he shall set the sheep by his right, but the goats by the left. Then shall the King say unto those by his right, “Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I hungered, and you gave me to eat; I thirsted, and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you took me in; (I was) naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came unto me.” Then shall the righteous be responding to him, saying, “Lord, when did we see you hungering and feed you? Or thirsting and gave you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and take you in? Or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick, or in prison, and come unto you?” And answering the King shall say unto them, “Truly I say unto you, inasmuch as you did it unto one of the least of these my brethren, you did it unto me.” Then shall he also say unto them by his left, “Those cursed: depart from me into the eternal fire, having been prepared for the Devil and his angels: for I hungered and you gave me nothing to eat; I thirsted and you gave me no drink; I was a stranger and you took me not in; (I was) naked and you clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and you visited me not.” Then shall they also be responding to him, saying, “Lord, when did we see you hungering, or thirsting, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto you?” Then shall he answer them, saying, “Truly I say unto you, inasmuch as you did not unto the least one of these, you did neither unto me.” And these shall go away into everlasting chastisement or punishment: but the righteous into everlasting life.”

And it came to pass, when Jesus finished all these words, he said unto his disciples, “You surely know that after two days for yourselves is coming the Passover, and (then) the Son of Man is being delivered up to be cut off.” [Daniel 9:26a, and 9:27a & b all refer to Messiah according to traditional interpretation. The phenomena of recapitulation applies there.]
